Seal Team Survival Swim and PT
Kristine McCarren
Kristine McCarren, PT, DPT, is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and survival swim instructor, known for her commitment to water safety for children. Born and raised on Long Island, Kristine pursued her interest in human kinetics, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Ithaca College in 2004. She later earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Stony Brook University in 2009, and has practiced in the fields of pediatrics, neurological rehabilitation, and orthopedics. In 2013, a powerful image of her best friend's 16-month-old swimming effortlessly underwater sparked a pivotal shift in her career. Upon learning that drowning is the leading cause of death among children under five, she felt a strong call to action. Committed to making children safer, she completed an 8-week survival swim training program near Orlando, FL, in April 2013, and was the first to bring this type of swim instruction to Long Island. Since then, as the owner and lead instructor of Seal Team Survival Swim and PT, Kristine has taught over 500 children vital survival skills to prevent water accidents, dedicating herself to lowering the staggering statistic of nearly 900 children dying from drowning each year. She has recently expanded her skill set to integrate her expertise in human movement and motor learning principles into her teaching, in order to individualize the program for children of all developmental abilities. In 2020, during a pause in her teaching due to the pandemic, Kristine wrote the children's book "Violet Finds Her Float." This educational tool emphasizes the importance of drowning prevention, teaching children and parents about real swimming skills and multiple safety layers. Kristine and her husband, an FDNY Lieutenant Firefighter, have 2 children and live in Port Jefferson Station, NY. What inspired you to make this project?
Drowning is the number one cause of death for children 1-4 years old. My mission is to educate parents and my community on how to prevent drowning and keep our children safe in and around the water.
