Automata is a unique art for building things that function and do some movements, it could be used to make a smile, tell a story or even communicate a feeling. Sometimes they call it desk toys. At Woodei we do automata using wood and brass.

My Name is Michael Henry, Automata Artist @ Woodei, I have been working in the software industry for more than 16 years. But I have been a maker since I was 7 years old. Last year thanks to Covid-19 I had a lot of free time and I began to explore the wood whittling and carving. Then I fall in love with making the carved figure move and do simple actions. That’s what we call Automata. I did a lot of Automata projects, some of them for major brands like Red Bull with 1.8 million views and Roznama with a moving robot in their last “Fe Baytena Robot” series.

What inspired you to make this project?
Making a figure out of wood is great, but adding action movement to that figure is awesome., I got inspired by the old American movies, a forest guy with a whittling knife that can produce a whistle or a figure.
